Case Study: Stopping old routines – getting a clear focus

Starting from…
It sounds like a hopeless situation for the new department head of finance and controlling. “I keep working from morning to night, and my last free weekend seems to be ages back!”, she complains desperately. “My boss is constantly putting pressure on me, and my staff expects me to solve all their problems immediately”. Being a strong self-motivated leader she wants to impress everybody with her skills, but lately has to admit to herself: “I am really at the end of my tether, what can I do?”

Personal-Strategy-Profile applied…
Review: Since her early childhood, and in addition to her later school duties, our client had been active as a professional athlete and had taken regular piano lessons. All of this kept her busy even on weekends. She admired her piano teacher because of her loving strictness and discipline. The family motto used to be, “Don't put off till tomorrow what you can do today”. And throughout her career all her bosses had been friendly workaholics. Core Competencies: Thus perseverance, accuracy, and a sense of duty characterize our client´s personality, and her colleagues are impressed by her professionalism. Internal Analysis: But having reached her present rung of the career ladder, she feels increasingly stressed on how to balance all the additional meetings and “trouble-shootings” with her daily, operational work. Even her health is already suffering. External Analysis: Checking her daily schedule we discover that she would be best described as her “own perfect expert assistant”, who completes every given task up to the smallest detail by herself. She hardly ever has time left for her leadership duties and personal strategic planning. “How can I escape from this treadmill?” she sighs nervously. Vision: With that goal in mind and listing her tasks and time budget, a necessity to set priorities comes clear, while letting go of some favourite expert tasks, and delegate more assignments to her staff. “In my future I will say “no” to challenges that don´t fit in and set clear limits”, she promises herself. She allows herself to envision more time for her private life and recreation, and decides to schedule home-office days and an early closing time on Friday. “Now I will use my endurance to make sure that all this comes true!” she closes our final coaching session with a smile.

Even the highest ambition to deliver outstanding performance should not keep you from sorting out worn-out behavioral routines regularly. This will help you to prevent stress and burn-out, once you develop a clear focus on what really counts, and thereby gain more energy and power. Our client realized: “Multi-tasking may easily get you trapped in a real “mission impossible”!”
