Case Study: Navigating through the crisis - leading as a role model

Starting from…
A financial bottleneck in the group of companies threatens to bring a large plant to a standstill. The production Manager must gradually introduce short-time work for his employees. He does not know whether the situation will recover again, or closure might be coming up. He realizes that his employees are now watching his actions very closely and what signs he sets. His main question is: "What and how can I communicate right now? How do I create security for my people?"

Personal-Strategy-Profile applied...

Review: As a technician from a traditional family of craftsmen, the client has learned to solve problems objectively. In his education and training, his interests were mainly focused on natural science and technology. Today he leads four team leaders with a total of 30 workers. External Analysis: In the client's family, much attention was paid to down-to-earthness, reliability and handshake quality. Problems were not discussed, but "simply taken care of". There was hardly any talk about one's own sensitivities and feelings in the family. Internal Analysis: At his core, the client is a straightforward, honest and warm-hearted person. He recognizes very well how others are doing and feeling. But he never shoes his own emotions in his professional environment: "This is only my family's business," he says. Core Competencies: As production manager he proudly bears responsibility for man and machine. Like his role models, he solves problems objectively and pragmatically. In stressful situations he "rumbles" from time to time to push things through. In our coaching he starts talking about his own feelings for the first time. He now realizes, how useful his previously hidden relationship qualities will be an asset in this crisis to strengthen security and motivation. Vision: In the current situation, the key to success for everyone will be how strongly the production manager acts as a role model. Together, we plan that in this crisis he will mor often have talks and meetings with his team leaders and employees to show personal presence and sympathy. On the factual level, he will pay more attention to precise order clarification, target agreement and control. On the relationship level, he will talk much more openly and to an appropriate extent about his own uncertainty about further developments. In this way he will be a role model and thus strengthen the "we" and the team spirit of all employees.

For a manger to successfully navigate through a crisis, acting as a role model is a crucial element. Acknowledging one's own uncertainty and at the same time leading with clarity is a special competence that can be developed in coaching. "Now I understand how I can recognize and use relationships to gain security for myself and others!"
